Rules are necessary for a good coexistence and to accompany children in their maturity and help them discern what is right from what is wrong. At Logos International School, a private international school located in Las Rozas, we know how important it is to define the rules. In this post we will see 4 steps that will help families to create rules at home for children.
Create and define rules at home for children
In order to identify the rules that are important at home, it is necessary to first examine the situation. Not all children must follow the same rules. Regular eating, bathing and playing habits are specific to each child.
Keep in mind that rules are much easier to follow if they are clear and precise so that children understand them easily. As we have mentioned, each child has his or her own specific behaviors. Therefore, for each behavior there should be a clear and simple rule for your child to process. Change "Keep quiet" to "Avoid talking loudly" and so on for each habit to improve.
Explain the rules to your children
To make your child understand the rules, it is necessary to perform some techniques that simplify their understanding. To see if your child understands them, have him repeat each rule in his own words. Another option is to remind your child of the rules often. Use creativity to use reminders, rule charts or educational games around the house.
Children usually like to learn visually. One technique is to use drawings about the rules or consequences of not following the rules. This way, your child will see the importance of following the rules at home in an exemplified and fun way.
It is important to set an example
To create rules at home that children understand and obey, it is necessary for all family members to do so as well. Children learn by observing the adults around them. In other words, if you follow the rules, the child will most likely follow the rules too.
In order for rules to be enforced, it is also advisable to apply consequences in case of non-compliance. If a rule is disobeyed, there should be an immediate response for both adults and children. Remember that you set the example, so don't forget to follow the rules.
At Logos International School we are concerned that our students have the same habits and good behavior in and out of the classroom.
